About 16 entrants took on the gigantic burger – which had four layers – to see who could eat it in the quickest time.

The big eat burger challenge was held at the Beacon Pub, in Market Square, Wellington, and has so far raised more than £700 for the Jayne Sargent Foundation.

Tactics included one man dipping his burger into a glass of water and another eating the chips first.

The winner was 44-year-old Dave Holloway, from Bridgnorth, who finished the meal in 23 minutes. Runner up was Beacon staff member Richard O'Neill, 26, and third was Toni Bennett, 53, from Bridgnorth.

The charity was formed in memory of a Telford businesswoman, mother and grandmother, who died in October 2013 following a long battle with cancer.

It is the first charity event put on by the Beacon's new owner Hannah Page since she took over the pub in September.

She said: "We are really pleased how the event went and the amount we raised for the Jayne Sargent Foundation which far exceeded what we expected. We would like to express our thanks to everyone who took part and made a donation."

Sara Bennett, Jayne Sargent Foundation trustee, said: "It went really well. There was a line up of blokes all having a good bit of banter. The challenge started and there were a few people who thought they were ahead of it with their tactics.

"Some tried to dunk their burger in water and and others thought they should eat the chips first.

"There were a lot of spectators and a lot of people cheering everybody on.

"We are really pleased that the Beacon was able to put on an event for the Jayne Sargent Foundation and we were not expecting such a big response or expecting people to raise so much money.

"A couple of chaps raised more than £100 each so we are really pleased that people went out of their way to support a local charity and also that it was all a but of fun as well. That money will be put into go to help local cancer sufferers."

The burger consisted of four beef burgers, bacon, onion rings, a hash brown and tomato and lettuce and contestants were asked to encourage people to sponsor them.
