More than 100 children scooted and cycled their way around their school playground to raise funds to build a pirate ship.

The event was organised by the older pupils on the eco-committee at Carreghofa School, Llanymynech.

Foundation stage youngsters took part yesterday with the older children getting in the saddle today.

Headteacher Claire Pritchard said the pupils had done all the planning themselves.

She said: "We're looking at buying a pirate ship to improve the playground and that's what the children wanted.

"It was organised by the eco-club and they asked the other children what they wanted for the playground. Once they'd decided they wanted equipment they asked the other pupils for ideas of what the design should be like.

"After they decided exactly what they wanted, they talked about it and decided they needed to do a sponsored something to raise the money, so they decided to get out their bikes and scooters. They all have their own bikes or scooters and they love riding them." Sponsorship money has just started coming in from the scooter and bike challenge but the total raised is still unknown.

Mrs Pritchard said the first half of the event had been a terrific success. "The weather was brilliant and they all had a great time," she said. "The whole school has taken part and it was fantastic."

The school has previously raised money for Comic Relief and Children in Need through holding sponsored events and sales.
