Much Wenlock pianist celebrates 106th birthday
One of the oldest ladies in the county has celebrated her 106th birthday.
Gladys Parker, a talented pianist who now lives in Much Wenlock, celebrated her latest landmark birthday with family and friends.
Mrs Parker was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1909 and trained in secretarial work after leaving school.
She has lived a full and active life and her many interests include music, with a passion for singing in church choirs and playing church organs.
Claire Brewer, the home's deputy manager, said: "Gladys celebrated her birthday on Sunday and all residents were invited to a tea party. She was presented with her cards and presents while pictures were taken by other residents who used to do photography as a hobby.
"Gladys is still very independent and likes to spend time on her own but she is also very chatty and often reminisces about her life and experiences.
"Whenever any children come into the home her face lights up and she is very popular with staff and the other residents.
"She is the oldest resident we have here by some distance."
Mrs Parker enjoys gardening, travelling, reading, cooking and needlework, living in her own home at the age of 100 before moving in to Wheatlands in 2010.
She worked part-time as a volunteer during the war years for various organisations and came to live in Cressage in 1984, taking an active role in village life.
Mrs Parker lived alone with just a little help from a gardener and carer a few hours each week before moving to the care home.
A community tea party was also held by villagers in Cressage when she turned 100, which saw local children sing her happy birthday.
