A chip pan blaze, a horse rescue and a huge explosion – it is all in a day's work for firefighters at one Shropshire fire station.

About 500 people attended the open day at Wellington Fire Station where they got to see exactly what firefighters do, as well as learning about fire safety.

Also at the open day were members of the Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes, who are based at the station in Haybridge Road, Wellington, Telford.

And officers from West Mercia Police spoke to members of the public about crime prevention.

Craig Jackson, watch manager at Wellington fire station, said overall the day was a huge success, with around £600 being raised for charity.

"We hadn't held an open day for a few years, and after this weekend's huge success I think it will have to become a regular thing," he said. Four lucky visitors were also given the chance to win a bottle of champagne donated by Bryan Ferry, after firefighters helped to save his son's life in December.

Merlin Ferry's car was involved in a collision with two other cars on the A458 near Cressage just before Christmas.

Firefighters from Wellington worked for more than an hour along with crews from Much Wenlock and Shrewsbury to cut Merlin free from the mangled wreckage of his Volvo.

As a thank-you Mr Ferry gave 12 bottles of champagne worth between £25 to £30 to the fire stations involved. Mr Jackson said: "We made over £200 from the raffle, as it was £1 per ticket.

"We are hoping to get Bryan Ferry to sign the bottles before they go on display."

The team at Wellington demonstrated what they could face on a 999 call.

Mr Jackson added: "We had a chip pan fire demonstration, and we also had Bullseye, our fake horse, on show, where people could see how we carry out our animal rescues.

"Also on the day we had what we call a Boom Box, where we fill it with gas before lighting it."
