Book club: Firefighter gripped by rescuer's memoir

Heroes parachuting into fires to save lives made for an exciting holiday read for one Shropshire firefighter.

Craig Jackson, watch manager at Wellington Fire Station in Telford, took on Smokejumper by Jason A Ramos as part of

.

He praised the memoir by one of America's most select firefighters.

Ramos is a smokejumper, one of the airborne firefighters who parachute into the most remote and rugged areas of the United States, confronting the growing threat of nature's blazes.

The book takes readers into Ramos's world as an active-duty smokejumper, exploring its history, and explaining why their services are more essential than ever before.

Like firefighters in Shropshire, he is dedicated to a job that can be dangerous.

Mr Jackson said: "It was saddening to hear of our brothers and sisters losing their lives in some incidents but good to see, like us here in the UK, that they learn from such disasters to prevent future repeats. It was a bit slow to start and then I managed to get into it.

"I read it on holiday in Spain, and I would recommend it as a holiday read.

"I enjoyed it and reading about the smokejumper and learning about how they are very skilled firefighters and strong individuals."

Mr Jackson added: "As a firefighter I can understand how challenging and exhausting this work could be."
