Pictures: Spooky celebration at the Shrewsbury's Quarry

It may seem a couple of weeks early for fireworks, but the skies lit up over a county town this weekend for a spooky celebration.

Ghosts and ghouls rubbed shoulders with fairground thrill-seekers as Shrewsbury's Quarry park played host to a Halloween fun fair.

On Saturday fairground rides lined the walkway down from the gates opposite St Chad's to the edge of the River Severn, along with stalls selling food, drink, sweets – and, of course, Halloween gifts and costumes.

Those with costumes of their own entered into a fancy dress contest earlier in the evening, judged by Shrewsbury's deputy mayor, Councillor Ioan Jones.

Meanwhile, across on the far bank of the river, firework technicians were preparing to help the evening go with a bang.

Speaking just before the fireworks at 8pm, organiser Graham Stokes, who was manning the dodgems, said: "We have been doing this for three years now for Halloween, and after this we go on to the West Mid Showground for the bonfire celebrations, so it ties in well with that."

He said the weather had been patchy through the afternoon, but things picked up once darkness fell as throngs of people made their way to the Quarry for the big finale.

"This year it has been a bit quiet earlier because of the rain, but people are starting to come down now," he said, as young people piled on to the dodgems.

Ben Hawkes, 45, from Fitz, near Shrewsbury, was there with son Theo, 10. He said a fun time was had by all.

"Having the fair along the avenue makes a difference, it gives it more of a theme park atmosphere," he said.

"It's good to see the Quarry being put to good use like this."
