Cinderella at Theatre Severn thaws out the big freeze

Outside lay a thick blanket of crisp white snow — but inside there was a carpet of riotous colour.

Welcome to Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn which has just launched its panto season — oh yes it has!

And John Spillers delivers yet again,— for his production of Cinderella is a perfect way to help thaw out Britain's big freeze. Burnt oranges, sizzling reds, baking blues and gregarious greens.

Song, dance, slapstick, a handsome prince, a heroine and two baddies.

Phew -— a colourful mini heatwave has just swept SY3!

Cinderella stars Andy Pelos as Buttons, Samantha Dorrance as Cinderella, Tom Yeates as Prince Charming and Shropshire's very own Eric Smith as Baron Hardup.

And stealing the show were the two ugly sisters Porscha and Merecedes, played by Michael Batchelor and Ian Smith, or was it their outrageously over the top costumes (and what a number of those scene-stealers there were — more than 20!).

Theatre bosses are delighted with the way tickets sales have gone.

They say they are on their way to another record breaking year.

"Ticket sales have been fantastic," said Jackson Cummings, marketing manager at the Theatre Severn.

"Obviously we have more performances on this year and there are tickets still available but we are on target to smash last year," he added.

Cinderella folllows last year's hit Peter Pan — the theatre's debut panto — which starred Emmerdale's Matt Healy as Captain Hook.

This year there are no stars from Soapland and there is no need.

The production is massive and the cast fantastic.

"Peter Pan was much more story-based whereas this year there is much more scope for getting the audience involved," said Mr Cummings.

And involved the audience was.

From six-year-old Daniel to the leader of Shropshire Council Keith Barrow — everyone played their part.

Cinderella runs until January 3 next year — and if you fancy the theatre equivalent of a hearty bowl of mouthwatering soup on a bitterly cold wintry day — this is a no brainer.
