Theatr Hafren in Newtown has been closed since the spring but is due to re-open on September 7, with a performance of Madame Butterfly by Mid Wales Opera.
There has been a full refurbishment, which has also seen the theatre's box office moved to a combined reception area with Coleg Powys, along with improvements to the bar area.
The work is the introduction of a new "fly tower", which is essential for moving pieces of scenery.
Sara Clutton, Theatr Hafren's administrator, said: "Half the shows we were having were left on the wagon. It was getting to the stage where technology is moving on so fast that we were getting left behind."
Mrs Clutton said there is new joint management structure with Coleg Powys.
She said: "We have had a change of management. "We want to give customers and students the best."
