Now, five years later, Mr Hughes is gaining a reputation as the singing farmer, often combining his large repertoire of songs with tales of life down on the farm.

The 55 -year -old, who still farms cattle and sheep at Trefnanney near Welshpool, says he is loving his new found career.

"When I was 50 I decided to give up the milking herd and just concentrate of sheep and cattle," he said.

"That freed up some time and so I picked up my guitar again. I had to completely re-learn how to play the instrument as I had so many years of not playing."

"I has spent my time farming and bringing up four children, which didn't leave time for much else."

After talking to his brother Ian, who also plays guitar, the pair decided to reform their old school band from the 1980s.

Storm was made up of the two teenage brothers, twins who now live in Telford, and a drummer now living in Mold. All had been friends at Llanfyllin High School. We played a few gigs but it was very hard trying to find times when we could get together," Mr Hughes said. "But I carried on getting gigs."

The singer/songwriter said he particularly likes going along to homes for the elderly.

"It is wonderful to here the residents reminiscing and I talk to them as well about life on the farm," he said.

"There is one lady that has quite severe dementia. But I did a set list one week and when I returned another week and missed a song out, she pointed it out straight away."
