Lois Williams, 20, from Welshpool, is used to performing in front of a crowd, but will be swapping the microphone for the catwalk as she bids to win the title.

Miss Williams, who has been singing since she was nine, also works as a beauty therapist and said she is honoured to have been given the Miss Powys International title. She hopes to scoop the big one in July.

She said: "I began singing when I was nine so it has been pretty much for as long as I can remember.

"Over the years I have performed at school plays, to local singing nights and charity events. My most recent performance was at a fashion show at the Swansea Grand Theatre, which was an incredible experience. My next gig is a real honour because it is with the Fron Male Voice Choir at St Mary's Church in Welshpool on June 14 so that side of things is really starting to take off."

She added: "I have always had a strong passion for beauty and fitness, however this is my first beauty pageant I have taken part in so it is all quite new to me.

"The women who win are confident, successful and inspiring young ladies who will be ambassadors for the country, so I am very proud to say that I have been chosen. A lot if people think it is about going on stage in pretty dresses with your hair and makeup perfect, but you have to show your personality through an interview and perform a talent, so it is about being an all-rounder.

"I have especially been overwhelmed by the support my boyfriend, family and friends have given me and I wouldn't be able to do it if it wasn't for them.

"I will be training hard now for the next three months, and will be raising money for Noah's Ark, a children's hospital charity based in Cardiff. I am also doing a skydive in aid of Hope House Children's Hospice on June 28."

Miss Williams said the final will be held at The Palace Hotel in Manchester on July 13 and the winner will be given an all expenses paid trip to compete in the Miss International pageant held in Japan. She has also secured sponsorship from Blow and Go, a hair salon based in Raven Meadows, Shrewsbury.
