Review: Little Shop of Horrors, Oakengates Theatre
If you're planning to do a bit of gardening this weekend – be careful what you feed the plants.
The blood-thirsty plant in Little Shop of Horrors might be the show's big draw – but the cast in Tadlop's production, which kicked off its run at Oakengates Theatre last night, are the real stars of the show.
The tale follows hapless Skid Row florist Seymour Krelborn, who finds fame and fortune when he buys an unusual and exotic plant during a total eclipse of the sun.
Seymour is played by Tadlop chairman Stephen Davies, who always shines in every show he is in and this is no exception.
He plays the geeky Seymour fantastically and at one point manages to juggle the puppet plant, singing and dancing all at once.
But a real star turn is Sian Thomas who plays fellow flower-shop employee and love-interest Audrey. Her singing voice is incredible – one so good is rarely heard in amateur productions and she is fantastic at playing the ditzy blonde – keeping up her Monroe-esque husky voice throughout the show.
Little Shop of Horrors runs at The Place Theatre in Oakengates until Saturday May 17, with performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. For more information call the box office on 01952 382 382.
