Pop star Beth Sherburn puts on show at Telford school
She is a singing sensation, who recently finished touring with The Saturdays – but Beth Sherburn says she is just as happy spending the morning chatting to pupils at a Shropshire school.
Beth Sherburn took a break from Wembley Arena to perform at Madeley Academy as part of a campaign to help tackle cyber bullying in schools.
The 23-year-old pop star, who is from the Midlands, was given a £250,000 record deal after she was spotted while working on the perfume counter of a shop.
Now she is using her new-found fame to visit school sin the area, both to heighten her own profile and to speak to youngsters about the potential dangers of the internet.
Beth began her set by performing a cover of Rihanna's hit Diamonds followed by her own single Stamp On It and finished with a cover of Beyoncé's OX and her new single Joker, which features rapper Lil Wayne.
She also took part in a question and answer session where the students asked her about cyber bullying and what they could do if they are affected by it.
After her performance yesterday Beth said: "Cyber bullying is not acceptable, and that is why I feel this performance was important.
"If I can make just one difference, to one child, I feel like I've done something, and it is very important to come to schools and talk to the pupils about these things.
"With Facebook and Twitter we need to help kids that are being bullied and by coming here today it should help some children that are being bullied in anyway."
Beth completed two performances for students at the Telford school, with both filling the schools auditorium with excited students.
The students were singing and dancing along while Beth sang and afterwards many of them waited patiently to get her autograph
Jonathan Boyle, deputy headteacher at Madeley Academy, said: "Both the staff and students thought Beth was wonderful, and it was one of the strongest lessons we have ever had at Madeley Academy."
Once the schools tour has finished Beth plans on heading back into the studio to work on a her album, and aims to release her next single in the new year.
The singer is busy trying to build her following after she caught the attention of music producer, John McLaughlin, back in December 2012.
Beth, who is originally from Sedgley, near Wolverhampton, was working at Debenhams at nearby Merry Hill Shopping Centre, when Mr McLaughlin overheard her singing along to Michael Bublé while she polished the shelves at the perfume counter.
Mr McLaughlin then left her with his number and asked her to call him so he could organise her record deal.
At first Beth didn't believe he was telling the truth, but after looking Mr McLaughlin up online she realised that he was being honest and has worked with huge names such as Take That and Girls Aloud.
Since then Beth's career has taken off with her having to split her time between the UK and America - as well as having the opportunity to support artists such as The Saturdays, Conor Maynard, Katy B and Duke Dumont on tour.
