Shropshire's favourite TV ad... Sainsbury's Mog the cat

Sainsbury's tale of a hapless cat wins the battle of the Christmas adverts, according a Shropshire Star poll.

But it is run close by Co-op's enduring tale of a young lad who pops out to buy a bag of ice and fills a bag of goodies and leaves it on an old couple's doorstep.

In fact, many of the most successful adverts this year deal with community spirit as well as touching on loneliness.

And those roundly criticised are those that have no "soul".

Tesco is punished with just two per cent of the vote for a series of comedy sketches that leave most people cold.

Interesting, also that John Lewis's multi-million advert featuring a man on the moon is beaten into fourth place by Aldi's parody of the very same advert. Refreshingly, a survey released today shows that most of us take little notice of the adverts.

They offer some festive entertainment but do not influence our shopping habits.

Market experts are being given something to chew over this Christmas alongside their turkey following publication of a SurveyMonkey analysis of Christmas advertising campaigns, which found that just 12 per cent influence consumer shopping habits.

Seven in eight of those surveyed indicated that advertising camapigns held no sway over their purchase decision, insisting that quality and price were the determining factors in what ends up under the tree.

1. Sainsbury's - 35%

2. Co-Op - 23%

3. Aldi - 16%

4. John Lewis - 12%

5. Lidl - 6%

6. Asda - 3%

7. Tesco 2%

8. Morrisons 2%

Mansoor Malik, managing director UK of research company SurveyMonkey, said: "Christmas is a great time of year, and we wouldn't be a grinch that says brands shouldn't contribute to the festive mood.

"However, we must be honest and recognise that if campaigns aren't driving sales, they're not meeting their core objective.

"Clearly, most brands today undergo expensive audience testing before running ads, but our findings suggest they have little effect on us." Another survey today dismisses all the big store adverts and names bread manufacturer Warburtons as the winner of the most successful Christmas advert of 2015. It is all thanks to Kermit and friends, with an advert that features the Muppets singing "The Giant Crumpet Show" in the Warburtons Bolton headquarters.

Scenes including Kermit settling down to watch an episode of Coronation Street and Miss Piggy flirting with chairman Jonathan Warburton have helped the bread maker steal the spotlight from John Lewis and Sainsbury's.

Millward Brown, a brand research firm owned by Kantar Group, asked consumers to rate this year's crop of Christmas adverts. The respondents scored the 18 most popular festive adverts across 12 factors that drive sales and build brand loyalty, including enjoyment, relevance and usefulness.

"The Giant Crumpet Show" was found to be the most effective advert, with an engagement score of 7.2, compared to the average of 4.5.

It was also found to be a persuasive sales driver, scoring 3.5 compared to the average 2.9.

"We've had a great response to the campaign – we set out to bring some joy and fun to advertising at Christmas, and this is proof that we achieved it with The Giant Crumpet Show," said Warburtons' chairman Jonathan Warburton, who appears in the festive advert.
