Watch: Fun at Shrewsbury youth centre
Riding a scooter has never been so much fun. Will Jones, 14, enjoys performing tricks at Flaxivity in Shrewsbury.
The club, based within the Flax Mill, is one of a number provided by Shrewsbury Town Council. Now the council, which took over youth services for the town this month, wants more young people to take advantage of the sessions.
It runs clubs at Flaxivity, Spring Gardens, The Grange Youth Centre, Sundorne Youth Centre and the New Lodge Youth Centre in Monkmoor. The council is also providing funding to Trinity Youth to provide sessions at Meole Brace.
Youth team leader Adam Purnell said they were pleased to be able to reopen the clubs and hoped the youngsters attending would start to influence the activities.
He said: "The fact that we have reopened has created a bit of a buzz, and there is a lot of excitement about it.
"The programme we have is not too rigid because we are getting to know the young people coming along and we want to listen to their ideas for what they want to do. As the sessions develop the programme will become more bespoke to the young people who are attending."
Council leader Alan Mosley said: "We are delighted to be able to offer this provision so as to protect and promote such valuable services for our young people.
"We have a very strong team of people with excellent experience of working with youth in a good variety of settings."
Flaxivity sessions take place on Mondays, The Grange on Tuesdays, Sundorne on Wednesdays, and Thursdays at New Lodge from January 28. All sessions are aimed at youngsters in Years 7, 8 and 9 and run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
