Ironbridge open for Easter this weekend

Ironbridge is open for business over the Easter weekend, despite ongoing work to replace walkways in the town.

Telford & Wrekin Council is encouraging people not to be deterred by the work and instead to take the chance to see its progress.

Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for Communities, Regeneration and Transport, urged people to visit the town.

She said: "There has been excellent progress along The Wharfage and Tontine Hill to upgrade the paving on the footways and this Easter weekend provides the perfect chance for people to go and have a look at the work that has taken place so far.

"Traffic management is being removed over the weekend to ensure all residents, businesses and visitors can make the most of the World Heritage Site without the restrictions that have been in place lately, and enjoy the area and all it has to offer.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to once again thank all the residents and businesses affected by the current footway improvements in Ironbridge for their continued support and understanding while the work continues."

The decision to replace the paving was taken because the York stone had become damaged and uneven, meaning it was considered unsafe.

Telford & Wrekin Council said that maintaining the stone would cost £300,000 more than the plan to replace the path.

However, the plans faced mixed reactions from residents, with more than 3,500 people signing a petition against the work.

To make things easier for Easter visitors all traffic management, which has been placed along the road while the work is carried out, will be taken away.

Traffic management will then be put back in place from Tuesday.

This weekend also sees the start of the Ironbridge Park and Ride services for the 2016 season.

Both services will operate all Easter weekend and each Bank Holiday weekend until the end of May.

They will then also operate every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday from July 23 until September 18.

The services costs £1 per person, or free for children under 16 and English concessionary pass holders.

The park and ride service can be used from its car park site at the top of Jiggers Bank into either the Museum of Iron and Enginuity in Coalbrookdale or the Museum of The Gorge in Ironbridge.

The Gorge Connect service can then be used to travel around the World Heritage Site to other museums and places of interest, for a fee.
