Green Man battle heralds summer at Clun Valley festival

The good news is that following a battle on Clun Bridge, summer is guaranteed to be on its way to the Clun Valley.

The appearance of summer was assured following the defeat of the Ice Queen by the Green Man on the 500-year-old Clun Bridge.

The battle is an integral part of the annual two-day Clun Green Man Festival, which opened on Sunday. The battle symbolises the victory of light and warmth over cold and dark and took place at midday yesterday.

The weather provided a typically damp bank holiday offering, but festival-goers sporting wellies and umbrellas were urged to cheer on the Green Man and help save summer. There were plenty of other attractions to keep people entertained.

Medieval soldiers in full armour walked alongside the Green Man, escorting him to his midday meeting with the Ice Queen.

Event organiser Jack Limond, the publican of the White Horse Inn, said that the festival is very much a community effort.
