Live music, food stalls and children's activities were laid on for those who braved the rain to attend the seventh annual fun day at the Plough Inn in Wellington – all in aid of Help for Heroes.

Organisers hope to take their overall fundraising total for the charity raised over the past seven years beyond the £100,000 mark. To date, the event has raised £83,000 and the total from this year's event will be confirmed in the next few weeks.

Crowds at the Help for Heroes fun day

Pub landlady Ruth Lowe said the event on Sunday, which was officially opened by mayor of Wellington Phil Morris-Jones, attracted a "great turnout".

Mrs Lowe, who runs the pub with her husband Eddie, said: "It went very well, the weather didn't put a lot of people off so we were very busy."

Crowds enjoyed a flypast by a Hurricane aircraft

She said: "Fingers crossed, we will have raised £100,000, but we won't know until the end of the month."

One of the highlights was a flyover by a World War II Hurricane, which is part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight display team and was flown in from Lancashire for the occasion.

There was music by local performers included Wellington Brass Band, local man Glenn Miller, Minor Glance, Rhi Moore, the James Brothers and headliners The Zoobs.

There was also a raffle where the top prize was £1,000 and an auction of more than 100 prizes donated by local businesses. The auction alone is believed to have raised £2,200.

The couple had the idea for the charity fun day when they first took over the pub.
