Penny pins her hopes on calf at Shropshire County Show
A teenager who rescued a calf whose mother rejected it will be entering the Shropshire County Show this weekend.
Penny McGrath, 14, helped to rescue three-month-old Jeffery after he was abandoned by his mother.
Now Penny helps care for the calf up to three times a week at family friend Caroline Hoggarth's small holding in Tern Hill.
Caroline said: "The calf was born in a field close to us in February and was given to us to look after.
"Everyone felt sorry for the little calf as its mother had rejected him.
"It was suffering from exposure so Penny helped nurse him back to health. She has been bottle feeding him for three months.
"Penny has been brilliant and has really looked after the calf. She walks it about two to three times a week and is so caring. She takes such good care of him. They are quite a pair together.
"We have been going to the Shropshire County Show for years and I suggested Penny and Jeffrey should enter.
"The calf comes walking with us and is very well behaved.
"Penny is not from a farming background but she is a natural. Fingers crossed they do well at the show."
The 141st show promises to be bigger and better than ever when it takes place at the Greenhous West Midlands Showground on Saturday.
The event will also include cattle, sheep, poultry horse and dog shows, farm machinery and marching bands.
A full programme of arena attractions is planned from early morning including the return of Broke FMX display team. The show will also welcome the Wirral Marching Piping Band for the first time, which will play alongside a young farmers float parade.
