Wartime spirit recreated at Ironbridge event
Ten-year-old Harvey Phillips may be far too young to remember the Second World War.
But he was among thousands of visitors to Ironbridge who were transported back in time as the 1940s – and the conflict that dominated much of the decade – were brought back to life.
Young Harvey was taught about some of the ammunition and weapons used during the war by Dave Croft of North West Military Collectors.
More than 500 Second World War re-enactors descended on Dale End Park over the weekend to help recreate that famous wartime spirit.
There were vintage stalls, a 1943-style beauty pageant and a flypast from an authentic Hawker Hurricane.
Graham Hickman, event spokesman, said: "It's been an absolutely brilliant two days. There were massive crowds, the park has been full and people have been very positive about it.
"We've had a big fun fair and classic games for the children, as well as 35 groups of re-enactors covering a mixture of military and civilian roles.
"We've all been amazed. There's been loads of people coming up to us and thanking us for doing it. It's something they feel Ironbridge has needed for a long while. There are the museums, but there are a lot of people here who aren't museum kinds.
"There's been a lot of positive feedback. We never expected it to be as big as it was. There's a real wartime spirit in the town at the moment."
As well as recreating battles, visitors could chat with each unit and had the chance to find out about the modern military from members of the Royal Irish Regiment, the Army Reserves and the Royal Navy.
A dance, complete with 1940s dance and costume, was held at Ironbridge Rowing Club on Saturday and several other shops joined in with the vintage atmosphere.
Mr Hickman said: "We've been amazed by what's gone on. They've really taken Ironbridge back in time.
"There's tape on the windows, bunting across the street and World War Two signage everywhere. The pubs are even playing patriotic music from the 40s.
"It's just been an incredible atmosphere, and we're definitely looking to do it next year."
