A Whirlwind helicopter – the last of its kind still flying in the world – will join the iconic Red Arrows and a host of other aerobatic display teams at an air show.

The Bob Jones Memorial Air Show will be held in Welshpool on June 19.

The Red Arrows will perform at the RAF Cosford Air Show on the day and then head to Mid Wales for a Father's Day flypast.

Meanwhile, organisers have announced the A490 past Welshpool Airport will be closed to all traffic at noon and remain closed for the duration of the show.

Since flying for the first time in 1965 the Red Arrows has performed more than 4,660 times across the globe and act as ambassadors for the UK.

They will join the air show schedule along with Andrew Whitehouse and his Westland WS-55-3 Whirlwind HAR 10. Another highlight will be the RAF Typhoon.

The world's only aerobatic formation wing-walking team, the Breitling Wing-Walkers, will be strolling around the skies with daring old-fashioned acts of bravery and, for the first time, the air show will have an Axis aircraft from World War Two – a Messerschmitt BF109, the infamous front-line fighter weapon of the Luftwaffe.

It was part of a huge fleet of ex-World War Two craft assembled for the 1968 film The Battle of Britain.

Publicist Martin Evans said: "We have a star-studded aerial line-up and we are expecting another bumper day at the fun-filled event for all the family.

"The iconic Sally B – the last airworthy B-17 in Europe – takes centre stage and will be accompanied by its former foe, the Messerschmitt Bf109. Both of these historic aircraft are film stars in their own right.

"There will be a host of other flying displays from the Silver Stars parachuting in at noon to kick it all off, to the Breitling Wing Walkers.

"There'll be displays from Team Raven, Bob Pooler and his Husky, Lauren Richardson in her twizzling Pitts Special and a visit from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as well as a vintage Fairey Swordfish."
