As the Mall in London was turned into a giant street party, so summer events in Shropshire were given a royal twist to mark the occasion.

Whitchurch's Jubilee Park played host to Party in the Park, with an action-packed programme of entertainment that included dancing, face painting and art exhibitions.

Renowned story-teller Helen East also gave a bandstand performance as well as other story sessions in the afternoon. Party in the Park was founded in 2012 to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

This year the event marked the Queen's 90th birthday with a 'proms in the park' style event. There was obligatory flag-waving, and a pageant.

Whitchurch Chamber of Trade ran a licensed bar once again and chairwoman Hilary Seward said: "It was a great day – 2016 is the fifth year Whitchurch are running the Party in the Park.

"This year it was with the added fun of celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday.

"Everyone seemed to really get into the spirit of things, we had plenty of people donning their red, white and blue and getting into the party spirit and having some fun.

"The Proms in the Park section celebrated the Queen's birthday and – thanks to town council funding – we were able to supply free Union Jack flags to give the feel and flourish of an actual proms. For a free event it was absolutely fantastic."

Elsewhere, members of Bridgnorth Townswomen's Guild held a royal get-together, serving up an afternoon tea in tribute to the Queen.

And the 90th birthday celebrations have also been an excuse for schools to hold events and to learn about the Royal Family.

Pupils joined in the National Anthem ahead of a party at Albrighton Primary School.
