Revealed: £55,000 raised to keep Llangollen Eisteddfod afloat
Tens of thousands of pounds has been raised to keep a Welsh cultural event afloat, it has been revealed.
Humanitarian Terry Waite revealed to the Llangollen Eisteddfod audience that £55,000 has been raised to keep the richly-cultural musical event going.
Eisteddfod president and peace envoy Mr Waite told the 4,000-strong audience attending the opening opera Carmen for the event's 70th birthday year, that he had a special message for them.
Mr Waite said: "There is a special message that I've been asked to give you.
"Last year, the Eisteddfod found itself in dire straits financially, that is, almost tottering on the edge of survival.
"And so a special appeal was made.
"I'm glad to say that because of the generosity of our sponsors, some of whom are here tonight, and all of you who have attended over the years, that the sum of £55,000 was raised - which was a fantastic result.
"It was enough to keep the Eisteddfod afloat and to plan for this year and subsequent years, knowing that there is a good chance now of having a positive outcome."
Mr Waite said all of the event's officers and everyone involved in the organisation, would like to place on record their gratitude to all those many friends who support "our beloved Eisteddfod".
He said: "Thanks to you all from the committee and for all of those who have responsibility for seeing this unique event continues way into the future.
"We live undoubtedly in troubled times...but here, here is a place where, through the language of music we can begin to at least touch the hem of peace."
Prior to the appeal, it was revealed in July last year, that the eisteddfod could lose as much as £70,000 this year.
Mr Waite said: "It's 70 years since the first Eisteddfod, took place here just in a field behind this Pavilion.
"I unveiled a commemorative plaque on Tuesday, reminding us that it was here after World War Two that in fact this unique event was founded, bringing together people from all over the world and young people in particular to work for peace.
"Many relationships forged at the Llangollen Eisteddfod last a lifetime."
