The Great British Bake Off winner was the star guest at the show – and revelled in the experience.

She gave demonstrations to fans and enthusiasts – much of which showed off the sort of food she loves to cook at home – and signed copies of books.

She also revealed that she thought Mary Berry was scarier than Paul Hollywood on the BBC show.

She said: "She's got an amazing poker face, she doesn't let on what she's thinking, she just wouldn't give it away so it was never easy with her.

"I did a lot of crying on Bake Off, by the end Paul Hollywood would come up to me and give me a hug, he's lovely."

Nadiya has enjoyed a whirlwind rise to fame since winning last year's series of the show, and earlier this year baked a cake for the Queen's 90th birthday.

The baker will also front her own TV show in the near future when she will travel back to Bangladesh to trace her culinary roots.

She had a look around the stalls at Saturday's show in the hunt for cheese and chutneys and also checked out some of the animals on show.

"There's always good cheese at local food events," she said.

Thousands of people defied early rain and headed to Newport Show. Because of the muddy conditions tractors pulling trailers were laid on to transport visitors.

But our reporter, Jordan Reynolds was left bemoaning the fact she had no wellies:

Food producers showcased some of the best tasty treats from Shropshire and surrounding counties while a pop-up street food area offered a taste of dishes from around the world.

The newly expanded Festival of Food had its own dedicated zone on the showground at Chetwynd Deer Park.

Elsewhere on the site, competitors took part in various classes, including handicraft, horticultural, horse and dog categories and there were displays and entertainment laid on for all the family.
