Thousands of music-lovers braved showers to enjoy a weekend of music in Ironbridge.

This year marked the 13th year of the annual Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival.

Held outside the Museum of Iron, the free event showcased the talents of the best brass bands from Shropshire and neighbouring counties.

This year also saw a guest band fly in from Germany, one of 20 that took to the stage, making it the largest, non-competitive brass band festival in the country.

Clive Freeman, one of the organisers of the festival, said today he was delighted with the event, whcih continues to grow year-on-year.

She said: "It went brilliantly.

"For the first couple of hours it was hammering down but we still managed to attract between 200 and 300 people.

"Over the course of the weekend we had about 4,000 people, which is up on previous years so we're heading in the right direction.

"And that is despite competing with Wimbledon and the Grand Prix."

Local bands who took to the stage included the Abraham Darby Brass Band, Llangollen Silver Band, Black Country Brass Band, Shrewsbury Brass Band the Wellington (Telford) Brass Band and Salopian Brass.

Although the main event was free, on Saturday night there was the annual charity gala open-air concert in aid of the Severn Hospice, Brass Night of the Prom.

Compered by BBC Radio Shropshire presenter Eric Smith, it featured the Ifton Colliery Band and the Band of the Royal Signals.

Though totals are still being calculated, Mr Freeman said they expect to have raised a record-breaking amount, predicting about £4,500.
