Hundreds of people headed to the north of the county for the 28th Wem Sweet Pea Show.

The show took place on Saturday and Sunday and was well-attended.

The annual event commemorates the life of hybridist Henry Eckford, who developed the sweet pea while living in the town.

The link dates back to 1888 when Mr Eckford moved to Wem to continue his work with sweet peas and to start what was to become a seeds business famous throughout the world.

This year's event took place at the Stanier Hall and in a marquee in the grounds of the Thomas Adams School.

It featured more than 70 competitive classes including formal vases, bowls, baskets, floral art, and a children's section.

There were also more than 20 stands offering advice, membership, raffle, horticultural accessories, willow weaving demonstrations, gifts, crafts, cards, souvenirs and perennial plants.

Val Good, member of The Eckford Sweet Pea Society of Wem, said: "It was a good day and the weather was perfect - it wasn't too hot and it didn't rain.

"It was amazing to see so many sweet peas as it has been too wet for them and we didn't expect to see many.

"There was a great showing of them and the tent smelt amazing.

"About 600 people came on Saturday I think, which was great.

"People were bused in from all over including Yorkshire and Lancaster.

"It is a lot of work but we thoroughly enjoy doing it.

"It is a very friendly society to be part of and we love meeting people at the show."

Councillor Rosemary Dodd, mayor of Wem, said: "I went to the show on Saturday and thought it was very good and well attended.

"It was well thought out and there were lots of beautiful flowers and supporting stalls as well.

"A mixture of people attended. A lot of people came from all over the country.

"There has been a great atmosphere and lovely buzz about the town this weekend with lots of brilliant events going on."
