Top riders from across the UK battled it out on Wrekin Riders BMX Race Club's £250,000 track in Dawley.

They competed against each other for the final two rounds of the British BMX Series as warm and sunny weather greeted crowds.

The national championship event was hosted by Wrekin Riders BMX Race Club for the first time from Friday.

Practice started at 4pm on Friday with racing starting at 12noon on Saturday and 10.30am on Sunday.

Racing continued throughout the days with motos, quarter finals, semi finals and finals taking place until about 6pm on both days.

The youngest national rider at Wrekin Riders taking to the track was five-year-old, Archie Smallman, from Lawley.

Alongside him was club riders including 15-year-old Callum Edwards who was looking to take the number one spot in the 15/16 cruiser category.

Kieran Edwards, club coach and chairman, said: "We have had a fantastic weekend of first class racing and we cannot thank everybody involved enough for their hard work and dedication for such a massive event.

"It is the first time we have hosted a British BMX Series and I am glad to say it was a huge success.

"Wrekin Riders BMX Race Club is run solely by a very small group of volunteers and to pull off the final two rounds of the British BMX Series has made me extremely proud.

"We have had 714 riders take part in the two-day event for what was a fantastic weekend.

"The weather was absolutely fantastic and our own riders, many of whom were riding at a national level for the first time, did absolutely brilliantly.

"As club chairman I would like to thank all of our riders for riding their hearts out and I am particularly proud

"I think we have certainly put Telford and Wrekin Riders on the map in terms of BMX racing a national level."

The club has spent the last 12 months preparing for the event.

This has included setting up a temporary campsite for 150 tents and caravans, road closures on Duce Drive, organisation of caterers and commercial stands and security.

The British Cycling event saw many local hotels become fully booked as BMX families from across the UK travelled to the borough.

Mr Edwards wished to thank the main club sponsor National Windscreens, who they secured last year, for their support along with many other track-side sponsors.

He said: "We really could not have done this without our main sponsor National Windscreen and every other business that has supported us in any way.

"It is imperative to remember that all of our club volunteers also work full-time and have worked around the clock for the club to pull this off.

"We'd like to thank Telford & Wrekin Council and Discover Telford for their support."
