Watch: Bird's eye view of The Wrekin at its best

It's a rare bird's eye view of a Shropshire landmark, made possible by advances in technology.

A decade ago you'd have needed a helicopter and thousands of pounds worth of equipment to take ultra-high definition video of The Wrekin.

Today, 50-year-old Colin Willacy just has to remember to take his drone with him when he's walking his dog.

The video, which requires the use of a 4K TV or monitor to truly appreciate, was uploaded to YouTube last week, and shows the Shropshire landscape at its finest.

Colin, who owns security equipment website High Definition CCTV and lives in Dawley, Telford, said: "I've had aerial photography gear for about four years now and I go out whenever I can and the weather is good.

"I like flying around The Wrekin area as it is safe, legal and away from people.

"It's a lovely area to photograph and it looks really nice from up there."

He added: "The footage was shot using a quadcopter with a camera underneath.

"I took off from a clearing in the woods opposite the Buckatree Hall Hotel, from an area I believe is known as The Ercall Unconformity.

"I'm always looking for new areas to film, and I would quite like to have a fly around the deserted Ironbridge Power Station, if permission was given."

The video was shot using a DJi Phantom drone.

The device itself is controlled using a dedicated control pad not unlike a radio-controlled car.

As it is being recorded, the camera feed is transmitted to a mobile device so that the pilot can see where they are flying. The drones can fly for about 30 minutes between charges.

The video shot is about four times the resolution of a regular high definition television, allowing for far more detail than normal HDTVs.
