Dozens of people flocked to Telford Shopping Centre to have their moment in the spotlight yesterday.

Among those to appear before casting researchers from the popular ITV show was 12-year-old Alicia French-Evans, from Shrewsbury.

The Shrewsbury Academy pupil played the guitar and sang her own version of Britney Spears' Toxic.

Alicia, who has only been playing guitar for two months, said: "I changed it to a slower version because it suited my voice. It went fairly well.

"I did the school talent show and it boosted my confidence. I've always wanted to perform."

Opera singer Maria Timberlake-Evans, 34, of Wellington, performed O Mio Babbino Caro from the opera Gianni Schicchi.

The mother-of-two, whose husband Andre died earlier this year from a brain tumour, said: "I've been watching the show for a few years.

"My husband and I were in training together. He passed away in January.

"I promised him I would continue with my singing. We had been training for two years.

"It was sad performing without him but he inspired me to do it. I did it for him."

Ms Timberlake-Evans, who has been taking private lessons, was supported by family and friends at the audition.

She added: "I was nervous to start with but it went really well."

Conny Batho, casting researcher for BGT, said: "We have had a really good turnout. There's been great community spirit."
