New festivals set to boost Welshpool economy
A Mid Wales town could be set for an economic boost thanks to plans to hold a number of new festivals in the town.
Welshpool Town Council has approved its programme of events for 2017 which features all of its usual, popular events with the addition of a new Welshpool In Bloom event during August, and a return of the town's Festival of Sport.
At the latest meeting of the council's events and tourism committee, members recommended relaunching the festival and will now approach local sports bodies to ask them to get involved in the event, which is due to take place during July or August.
Councillor Graham Breeze, chairman of the committee, said: "It's all about attracting people to Welshpool, getting them to spend their money here, and really getting Welshpool recognised as the place to go.
"These new additions will certainly prove a boost for the town, the canal festival last year had been the latest but now we're looking ahead for Welshpool In Bloom which we hope the town's many keen gardeners come out in force to get involved in, and then there's the Festival of Sport, which Welshpool Town Council used to run."
The programme for 2017 also includes the annual carnival on May 29, a Canal and Food event on July 15 and a Keep Welshpool Tidy Week in March.
The highly popular Bob Jones Memorial Air Show and Festival of Transport will also return again on June 11.
