First European Christmas market arrives in Telford
Christmas ornaments, tasty food and unusual drinks – a town's first European Christmas market has arrived and it's proving a success with visitors.
With more than 30 chalets to see, the Telford & Wrekin Council-run market has transformed Southwater with the sorts of festive gifts and foods usually only available in cities like Birmingham and Liverpool.
The message from shoppers and traders is clear – this sort of event can only be good for the people of Telford.
Sue Kilford, 56, from Newport, said: "I've been to the Birmingham Christmas market and although this is on a smaller scale, it's very good.
"It's smaller, but it's more specialised. I like the way it's set out, it looks very festive. I'm meeting some friends and we thought the Christmas market would be a nice way to spend the day.
"This is what Southwater needs. There's so many shopping malls, they've all got the same stores. You do what you have to do, then go home. Something like this keeps you sticking around a little longer."
Paula Hickman, 42, was at the market with her two children. She'd travelled in from Stourbridge for the event.
She said: "I think it's nice and festive, and it's a nice place to bring the kids.
"I wouldn't dream of going into Birmingham with them, so it's nice to have the option to bring them here."
Phil and Lil Davey travelled to Telford from Bristol to visit family. They were pleasantly surprised when they saw what on offer, adding that Southwater's market rivalled anything they had at home.
Phil, 69, said: "Bristol was more compact that Telford's. There were more stalls, but the gangways between were condensed."
It's the first day of business for stall holders at Gourmet Kebab Kitchen. Gerry Nicodemou, one of the owners, said: "It's been great so far. There's been a very nice vibe in the area. It's the first year they've been doing it and it feels like it's going to be a great success."
Mary Woodward works for craft stall Travellers Finds. She said: "
Everybody is very friendly and polite, and there will be a nice Christmas atmosphere once the late night shopping kicks in."
