Move on more gigs at Shrewsbury Town stadium

The chief executive of Shrewsbury Town Football Club says it is open to hosting more big-name concerts.

Earlier this year the club was given permission to expand the number of events held at the Greenhous Meadow by Shropshire Council.

Now Brian Caldwell, the club's chief executive has said that they would be interested in hosting more big-name events in a repeat of Elton John's appearance in 2011.

Mr Caldwell said the events would not only provide a boost for the football club but the wider Shrewsbury economy.

He said: "Shrewsbury Town Football Club will always consider use of the stadium for any other events such as concerts providing the timing doesn't affect matches, and is worthwhile not just for Shrewsbury Town Football Club but for the local economy.

"The previous concert held at Greenhous Meadow was a resounding success for all who attended, so where possible we would be open to hosting further concerts in the future."

About 16,000 fans turned out to watch Elton John's performance.

The stadium was built in 2007 with conditions preventing it from holding a number of events without prior permission from Shropshire Council.

But when applying for permission to expand what it could stage, the club said it wanted more "flexibility" over what it could host each year.

As a result Shropshire Council has agreed the stadium can hold six events a year.
