Everyone knows Shropshire's iconic Iron Bridge is flipping brilliant.

And it lived up to its reputation, when dozens of people came to the site to take part in a pancake race.

Visitors saw police officers, morris men and some of Blists Hill Victorian Town's residents take part in the race, to mark 50 years of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.

To mark its milestone, the trust held the pancake flipping contest on the bridge yesterday.

The trust was looking for 50 people – one from each year since its founding – to take part on Shrove Tuesday.

Pancakes were provided by the Tontine Hotel, though participants had to bring their own frying pan.

Among those taking part was Telford & Wrekin Councillor Nicola Lowery.

Ward member for the Ironbridge Gorge, she said: "It was brilliant to see so many people at the pancake flipping contest and it was great fun to take part. Our world-famous Iron Bridge acted as the perfect backdrop to host this event in celebration of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum 50th anniversary."

Elsewhere in Telford, a pancake race was brought back for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Great Dawley Town Council held a 60 metre pancake race down the High Street, from the Elephant and Castle to the bandstand.

It was the first time the event has been held since 1988.

Local businesses got involved, as did Dawley CofE School, with the council supplying pancakes and frying pans.

Ian Preece, events and project manager for Great Dawley Town Council, said: "I thought it would be nice to bring it back and get a bit of community spirit going."
