Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury - review
As someone who knows most of the colours of Joseph's coat in the correct order, this musical has a very special place in my heart.
I first performed in the show aged 10 in the Joseph choir and it is clear to see why this production is still drawing in the crowds many years later.
A lavish production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has made a welcome return to Shrewsbury this week as part of its record breaking tour.
Star of the show Joe McElderry takes on the title role in this latest Bill Kenwright production, which is simply unmissable.
He certainly brought the X factor to the show and the packed Shrewsbury audience at the opening night loved every last minute of it.
The former talent show winner was note perfect and gave a spin tingling performance of Close Every Door To Me – which was one of the highlights of the show.
In a show which seems almost made for him, he can show off his true vocal range which saw him win the X Factor in 2009.
Fellow talent show star, former Britain's Got Talent runner-up Lucy Kay, was the glue that held the show together with her powerful vocal narration throughout.
And not to mention the cheeky brothers who each had a great stage presence and produced some stunning harmonies.
One of my favourite songs - Those Canaan Days – showed many of the brother's vocals and is always a crowd pleaser.
The whole cast were enthusiastic and a joy to watch. And also a special mention must go to the Joseph choir who smiled their way through the performance and knew all the right notes and hand movements.
Funny, witty and spectacularly colourful – this is a production all ages can enjoy.
By the end of the show most of the audience were dancing in the aisle and after a standing ovation, a crash of drums and a flash of light, were still singing on the way out.
The musical – the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice – proves why it is simply timeless and why audiences still flock to watch. Go Go Go Jo!
Joseph runs at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn until Saturday.
