How better to celebrate turning 101 than with a good, old sing-song? That's exactly how popular Telford karaoke singer Stan Saxon marked his milestone birthday.

Great-great-grandfather Stan, of Hadley, celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, surrounded by his friends and family and enjoying his favourite pastime.

Stan is a regular on the Telford karaoke scene, and has even appeared on television.

In 2006, at the age of 90, he was encouraged by his daughters to write a book called I Did it My Way.

He also recorded his first CD at the age of 91, which covered everything from Sinatra to the Sex Pistols.

At 94, he became one of the oldest people to appear on Britain's Got Talent.

And he wowed judges Piers Morgan, Amanda Holden and Louis Walsh when he sang Frank Sinatra's My Way at Birmingham's NEC and Hippodrome, receiving a standing ovation.

Mr Saxon is well known for his karaoke-singing at several pubs around Telford, and marked his milestone birthday with a night at the Horseshoes Inn, Ketley, two days before his actual birthday on Thursday.

Stan was joined by his daughter Linda Chadwick, 72, of Admaston, as well as a number of other family members and friends.

Linda said: "He doesn't get out as much any more but he sings in the house and sings to the carers."

Stan was born in March 1916 in Swinton, Salford, but his family moved to Shropshire when he was six years old as his father got a job in the Madeley Wood pit.

In his younger days he was heavily involved in various sports, including cycling, for which he trained at the St Georges track. Super fit, he thought nothing of cycling to Rhyl for the day.

In 1935 he was the British Cycling Champion for over a mile but also found time to play for the Kynnersley football team and then refereed until he was 70. When he finished he played bowls until he was in his 90s and was the oldest player to ever play for Shropshire County.

He is also a father to Pauline, 77, who lives in Shrewsbury, a son Philip, 43, who also lives in Shrewsbury and Margaret, 76, who lives in Oxford. His son Stanley died in October. He is grandfather to six, a great-grandfather of 12 and a great-great grandfather of one.

Linda said: "He's just an amazing man. He never makes a fuss, he never moans about anything, he is a lovely man and I'm so proud of him."
