St George's Day: Preparation underway for Newport celebrations
Parades, shops draped in red and white and a slaying of the fiery dragon – preparations for the town's St George's Day celebrations are well under way and organisers are looking for residents to join in.
Newport will be transformed as a procession leaves the car park at the Shakespeare and marches through the town.
The celebrations are set to take place on April 22, with the planning committee asking for help to making the event really special.
Councillor Peter Scott said: "We want all eateries to consider selling the fiery dragon sausages from Matthews Family Butchers and St George buns from Jaspers in the week leading up to the parade.
"We'd also like to see everybody deck out their premises with red and white – there will be a prize for best dressed window.
All residents can join in the fun by dressing up and there is a best dressed child competition with a prize for the winner.
"In the meantime the red buckets are all over town collecting towards the 'mile of cash' so please put your change in one to help raise £1,000 for local charities.
"Groups and organisations are invited to join the procession which leaves the Shakespeare car park at midday with the live dragon slaying soon after."
