Video: Shropshire shoppers bob along to floating market

It is shopping – with a difference.

Rather than heading to the supermarket, shoppers in Market Drayton had the chance to buy some special treats, sold from canal boats.

The May Day Bank Holiday weekend saw a floating market take to the waters in the town on Saturday, Sunday and today.

A floating paradise for shoppers took to the waters between bridges, opposite Talbot Wharf at Market Drayton

Five boats were moored between bridges 63 and 64, opposite Talbot Wharf.

Sue Meades of Mugs Afloat was selling personalised mugs and items from her boat That's D'riculous.

She said that the start of the market had been a success, thanks to the clear weather over the break.

Of the weekend, she said: "It went quite well, everyone was fairly busy, all the traders had quite a good day and all the local people that came out seemed to enjoy it."

As well as Sue, traders selling on the floating market included The Blacksmiths Craft, The Pirate Boat, Morgan Jane Photographer, Away with the Fairies and Traditional Canal Art by Julie. She said: "We've had a real variety. All the sellers are very different so that has been good."

It is a first time selling for Sue at Market Drayton and she got involved with her role with the Roving Canal Traders Association and said the floating market had been set up because of the cancellation of a normal market in Norbury.

But there are plans to bring it back in future, with even more traders.

She said: "We hope to come back next year and we can hold it either side of Norbury."
