Shropshire schoolchildren come together for book quiz
Pupils from six schools in Shropshire came together to test their knowledge on books in a quiz inspired by a shadowing scheme.
Idsall School, in Shifnal, hosted the quiz with teams from Abraham Darby Academy, in Madeley; Charlton School in Wellington; The Priory School in Shrewsbury; Lacon Childe School in Cleobury Mortimer and William Brookes School in Much Wenlock also taking part.
It was inspired by the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway shadowing scheme.
Every spring, CILIP: The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals invites children and young people to get involved with shadowing.
They shadow the judging process for the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Children's Book Awards by reading, discussing and reviewing the shortlisted books.
At Idsall School on Thursday, teams of pupils competed in seven rounds involving questions on books nominated for awards and on their general book knowledge.
One of the judges for the awards also talked to the children.
The quiz was won by the team from Idsall School and a trophy was awarded.
Peters Educational Books, based in Birmingham, also handed out books, posters and bookmarks to all children taking part.
Staff were also given goody bags.
Paula Hazlehurst, library manager at Idsall School, said: "The questions were about characters and what happens in the books.
"We also had a general knowledge round. There were 10 children on each team.
"We started the quiz with William Brookes School in 2005.
"It is fantastic. It was great seeing so many pupils from different schools taking part and getting them talking about books and reading.
"They were excited and the comments from everyone were fantastic.
"I want to thank everyone who helped and took part."
Idsall School has signed up to the shadowing scheme and buys books related to it for pupils to read.
Ms Hazlehurst said: "They tend to be books of really good quality and have fantastic writing."
