It is one of the county's most historic venues but Attingham Park has been welcoming history of a different kind.

The National Trust estate was the setting for Severn Hospice's Classic Vehicle Rally on Sunday, with more than 200 historic cars turning out in support of the charity.

The event proved so popular that the staff had to open up an extra car park to accommodate the number of visitors.

Severn Hospice fundraising manager Lucy Ruff said they had been delighted with the way the day went.

She said: "The event was literally a roaring success. There were more than 200 classic and vintage cars on display, enjoyed by thousands of visitors. It would have been a real sight too to see all those wonderful old machines sweeping along in a cavalcade between the hospices in Shrewsbury and Telford and Attingham Park – it would have been Shropshire’s best-looking convoy that’s for sure!"

Ms Ruff said they were thankful to Attingham Park and the car owners for their efforts to make the day a success.

She said: "The park is the perfect back-drop for us and I’m delighted to say they had to open up their overflow car park to accommodate everyone who wanted to come.

"The rally is so well supported and the vehicle owners really do make an effort to add a proper touch of sparkle to the event. The whole point of it all, of course, is to raise money for Severn Hospice and while we haven’t finished counting all the donations at this stage, I’m delighted to say that judging by what we could see yesterday we are on track for another successful day. Thank you everyone for supporting the event and helping Severn Hospice, it really makes a difference to our patients and their families.”
