Album review: Gogol Bordello – Seekers And Finders

Their seventh record is as wide and varied as any other in their repertoire. And he adds: “It just feels quite complete in capturing the Gogol familia transcontinental lifestyle, every side of it… The Good, The Bad, and The Snugly.”

If that were a movie it sounds like it would be pretty special. And Eugene and his band of nine travellers could competently portray every character.

This was written over an extended period of time on three different continents. It brings violins, accordions, trumpet and marimba to a party that has always included the staples of guitars, drum and bass.

“I was still bouncing between Latin America and Eastern Europe when songs were emerging, but finally, as soon as I moved back to New York, it all came into focus,” Eugene adds. The different sounds throughout suddenly make sense.

There is a lot of fun to be had here. The ferocious pace of openers Did it All and Walking On The Burning Coal are very aptly named. The crunching choruses and fast-paced riffs don't give you a moment's rest. It's like the early hits Mishto! and Start Wearing Purple but sped up to leave you breathless.

It's not all ferocity and speed though. The understated title track uses clever lyrics among the alternating male and female vocals of Eugene and guest singer and close friend Regina Spektor. The uplifting nature of the chorus will sparkle live, this really is a masterpiece.

The haunting late dusk Wild West desert permeates the brisk but light Familia Bonfireball, while there is something of a spooky elevator music vibe to Clearvoyance. The eclectic amp is being ramped up well past 11 here.

We delve into classic rock territory with Love Gangsters - the grittier sound adding to the beautiful gravelly nature of Eugene's tantalising voice.

And we still have time to lay back and sip a beer with the sing-along party anthem Still That Way.

Their live shows are already a must-see special event. This record will only improve them further.
