Hector's Greyhound Rescue hosted a fun dog show on the Bailey Head in Oswestry on Saturday which raised more than £600.

A giant Irish Wolfhound, a Springer Spaniel Puppy, a speedy lurcher and more lined-up in front of the Guildhall in the hope of being crowned Best in Show.

Volunteer Fred Brown said he hopes the successful event will become an annual addition to the Oswestry market calendar.

"We would love it to be an annual thing," he said. "If David Clough, the market manager, asks us to return next year we would be delighted.

"We're all really pleased with how it went and the turnout considering we managed to arrange it in such short notice. We planned it all in just four weeks so I think we did well."

All of the money raised on the day will be spent on vet bills, dog food and temporary accommodation for some dogs in kennels as there is not enough foster homes available.

"We usually have around 15 dogs so the cost of all that really adds up," Fred added. "What was great about Saturday was that we got another foster parent out of it and another couple have said they will adopt one of our dogs when they come back off holiday. It makes it all worthwhile when things like that happen."

At the end of the day, the winners of all of the categories, including best rescue, best pedigree, market dog and waggiest tail, were entered into the Best in Show ring.

A lurcher girl took the top prize followed by a Labrador who won reserve Best in Show. The winner of each category went home with a rosette and a box of treats.

The event was sponsored by BBR Opticians in Oswestry. Ruth, BBR director, and Richard Grellier got involved after they rescued Paddy who was taken in by Hector's after he was abandoned.
