Budding stars wanted for Cannock Chase ‘beast’ film

Described as a combination of The Goonies and Super 8, the film will explore the legend of the big black cat who prowls the Chase woodland.

It will be produced by Hednesford-based True Films, in collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton.

Six young actors, who look between 12 and 18, are needed to appear as the lead characters in the movie.

Project director Andrew Walkington, who lives locally, has said he is looking forward to getting started.

"It’s about three children who set out to capture on video the black cat of Cannock Chase and prove that it really exists," he said. "During their adventure they learn a little bit more about each other and life. They embark on their journey as children but they return having taken their first steps towards adulthood.

"They also have to deal with the very real threat of bullying from three older siblings."

Having recently moved to the Staffordshire are himself, Andrew said he was encouraged by the 'warm welcome' he had received – and said he was keen to support the local arts scene.

He added: "Cannock is surrounded by some of Britain’s most beautiful landscapes and the people are welcoming, innovative and creative. I’m looking forward to making this film and help in any manner I can to give Cannock a voice in the UK media.

“I’m passionate about giving young people creative opportunities where they normally wouldn’t have any. And I’d like to invite the young people of Cannock to volunteer and audition for this community film. It doesn’t matter if you have any previous experience – it’s an opportunity to learn how a film set works and to develop your acting skills."

Andrew is the founder and former managing director of The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy – a feature film academy that for 10 years trained more than 3,000 young people from across Britain in film production and performance.

Through his current company, True Films, Andrew has produced three low budget feature films - two of which are due for UK release this year.

He is also currently studying for an MA at Wolverhampton University and is producing this film in collaboration with the university for his course. He is hoping to distribute the film to numerous film festivals in the UK and further afield.

An open workshop audition will take place at Pye Green Community Centre, Bradbury Lane, Hednesford, from 1.45pm to 3.45pm on Saturday, March 9.

Anyone interested who is younger than 18 must bring a parent or guardian along with them. Filming will take place later this month.
