The Flaxmill, the world’s oldest iron-framed building, is being restored in a multi-million pound project by Historic England

Over the next 15 months repairs and structural work will take place on the Grade II listed Kiln, as well as the Grade I listed Main Mill’s engine houses and the Jubilee Tower.

Finishing in April 2020, these works will pave the way for the final stage of the restoration of these two buildings before they reopen in 2021.

A light installation on display at the Grade I listed Main Mill will end tomorrow.

Visible from the street, ‘As Shadows Return’ used silhouettes behind the windows to show workers and machinery inside the mill and was unveiled at the end of last year.

The installation, by renowned light artist Andy McKeown marks the completion of the first phase of the £28m restoration project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic England, Shropshire Council and the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings.

Croft Building and Conservation will be leading the building works again having won the phase two contract late last year.

The buildings are being transformed into high quality offices and there will also be a cafe and interpretation space.
