Steam back at Severn Valley

Steams trains are back in service at the Severn Valley Railway, having been temporarily suspended due to the hot weather.

The heritage railway, which runs from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster, halted its steam services earlier this month over concerns about fire safety.

Historic diesel engines were used in their place.

The decision followed a number of call-outs to the fire service on July 8 to deal with several small embankment fires along the line, probably caused by ash from steam locomotives.

Two steam engines will operate alongside the diesel locos today, followed by a further one tomorrow and a fourth one on Sunday, subject to any fire issues.

If the weekend operations run smoothly, the well-known loco No. 43106 ‘The Flying Pig’ will rejoin the services on Monday.
