Bridgnorth pub on the money for value
As the price of food and drink continue to rise, one Shropshire pub has been given an award for its value for money.
The Old Castle pub in Bridgnorth has been given the Value Pub of the Year award by the Good Pub Guide.
Bryn Masterman, landlord of the pub, said the key was down to quality food at a competitive price.
"Our value for money really goes with all the food that we do," he said.
"The vast majority of our food is completely home made and we always make sure we give great portions for a reasonable price - it's quality and quantity."
The Good Pub Guide is one of the leading travel guides for pubs across the country, and hosts various annual awards for pubs in different categories.
"I received a notification through the post about it a fortnight ago and that was that," he added.
"It came as quite a surprise but we're over the moon about it.
"It's always great to be recognised for what you do so hopefully this will boost trade even more.
"In the kitchen we have two chefs and a team of kitchen assistants who help them, so it's not done to a massive scale but obviously we're doing something right."
The Good Pub Guide is published annually, and was released on September 6.
Mr Masterman, 57, was a firefighter in Cheshire and a member of the Royal Navy before he turned his hand to the pub life.
"I've been in the pub for 12 years now, which doesn't sound too bad, but I'm 57 and starting to feel it, but it's definitely something I enjoy doing and I'll carry it on," he said.
"Hopefully we'll be back in the guide for next year as the best value for money pub - we'll certainly still be delivering quality food for a reasonable price."
