Sir Lenny Henry backs sporty fundraiser
Sir Lenny Henry has backed a fundraising campaign which will see members of the public join university staff and students to run, cycle and row the distance from the region to the Eiffel Tower next week.
Birmingham City University staff and students are embarking on the 369-mile mammoth challenge from Edgbaston.
The challenge will be broken up into legs with participants tasked with pledging their time and energy to contribute to the three segments of the route and help raise money for the cause on Thursday March 22.
Spin bikes will be used to cycle the 183 miles between Edgbaston and Dover, rowing machines will cover the 20.7 miles across the English Channel from Dover to Calais, while runners and walkers will make up the 165.3 miles from Calais to Paris.
Based in Birmingham City University’s brand new Health, Education and Life Sciences building, the event will give participants just six hours to contribute to completing the full distance (10am to 4pm).
Sir Lenny Henry, the chancellor of Birmingham City University, said: “I am very proud to see staff and students at Birmingham City University supporting Sport Relief with an exciting endurance challenge.
“Whatever your ability, get yourself down to our City South Campus and get stuck in as we walk, run, cycle and row from Birmingham to Paris.
“Sport Relief aims to make a huge difference to the lives of people in the UK and some of the world’s poorest communities. None of it would be possible without the amazing support of the public and events like this are a fantastic way of raising awareness.”
