Members of the British Driving Society were out and about in Whitchurch and surrounding villages as part of the event, which has been running for about 30 years.

Ponies and horses gathered at the lorry park in Prees Heath from about 11am yesterday before setting off from The Raven car park at 12.30pm.

After making their way through Tilstock, members headed to Whitchurch town centre for a civic reception.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to cheer on the horses and riders.

A commemorative brass and rosette was given to each driver in the group to mark the event.

Two trophies – the Billy Cliffe Plaque and the horse of the day trophy – were also presented on the day to winning connections.

The event concluded with participants enjoying a carvery lunch at The Raven Hotel in Whitchurch.

Councillor Mike McDonald, mayor of Whitchurch, said it was an excellent way to start the new year.

He added: "It went really well and I really enjoyed it.

"There were about 10 or 12 horses and quite a few people turned out to see it.

"We distributed brasses and rosettes as well as mince pies and mulled wine."

He added: "It is important to keep traditions alive and moving forward. It was good to see a couple of young people take part as well and we hope this event keeps on going."

Parade organiser Dot Moreland added: "This event has now been going on for about 30 years and we bring in good cheer on New Year's Day along with the horse and ponies.

"It is a great tradition and something we all look forward to."

The established club holds the parade every year with another at Easter and these are always followed by a civic reception conducted by the mayor of Whitchurch. Last year's New Year's Day parade saw about 10 people take part, including children on Shetland ponies.
