Mr Jones was speaking during a visit to the sun-baked festival, which has been described as one of the best ever.
He said: "I would say it is the jewel in our crown so far as international festivals are concerned, probably only vying with the Edinburgh Festival."
Eisteddfod chairman Gethin Davies, who first attended the event as a young programme seller in 1951, hailed this year's festival as one of the best ever.
He said: "The quality of the competitions has been immense."
Jools Holland brought the curtain down on the event last night with his rhythm and blues band.
