The rating reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the inspection by the local authority, with inspectors looking out for how food is handled, stored, and prepared and how clean the premises are.
The scheme gives businesses that serve or provide food a rating from five (very good) to zero (urgent improvement is required) which is displayed on their premises and online so customers can make informed choices about where to buy and eat food.
