TV review: Dancing on Ice

With her glossy blonde mane, killer figure and famously ample chest, signing up Pamela Anderson for Dancing on Ice (ITV1) was sure to be ratings winner, right?

Wrong, say the voting British public, who, after seeing her for just two minutes on the ice decided they'd had enough and left her languishing in the bottom two with no other than Keith Chegwin.

But the shame on last night's launch show did not end there. The former Baywatch actress was forced to stumble her way through another routine, boobs flying everywhere and staggering all over the shop.

And even a flash of her marvellous bosoms could not save her, and she suffered the ultimate embarrassment – being outclassed on the ice by Cheggers.

So poor Pammy's been sent packing after just one show, and the producers are no doubt crying into their chequebooks. For the Baywatch babe that millions adored in the 90s was expected to be one (or two) of the shows biggest hits.

Philip Schofield was certainly very excited. "We've got a real Hollywood superstar this year!" he proclaimed.

And her partner Matt Evers said he was living every man's dream. Alas that dream was only to last one evening, and Pammy was quickly waved off back to LA.

So what else will keep the viewers enthralled this series? Perhaps another big bust up between judges Karen Barber and acid-tongued Jason Gardiner.

When the latter was dropped last series, viewing figures plummeted by two million. So the straight talking Aussie has been enticed back to the panel, his rift with his arch enemy Barber bubbling under the surface.

And with the amount of withering looks she gave him after his cutting comments last night, it won't be too long before she's stretching across the judges' table and trying to strangle him with one of his poseur-ish neckerchiefs.

There's also the much publicised romance between Corrie star Samia Ghadie and her partner Sylvain Longchambon.

All week they've endured headlines about their blossoming relationship, which emerged just days after he ditched girlfriend Jennifer Metcalfe (also a stunning, northern soap actress – he's certainly got a type).

Footage showed a nervous Samia bursting into tears after days of speculation about them. And although they tackled the rumours head on, with newspaper cuttings flashing across the screen, they didn't dispel them either.

Everyone loves a good romance though, and these two make a ridiculously good looking couple too, damn them.

Cheggers has got his skates back on a year after he literally crashed off the show last year. The comeback king, dancing aptly to Things Can Only Get Better, delivered a great performance, despite breaking his shoulder and three ribs in training in the 2012 show.

Only half of the contestants danced last night, with Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle, X Factor winner Shayne Ward and Eastender Matt Lapinskas all getting through to the next round. And next week it's the turn of Essex girl Lauren Goodger, politician Oona King, Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas, comic Joe Pasquale, presenter Anthea Turner and boxer Luke Campbell.

Airing just a few weeks after its ballroom dancing rival Strictly trounced the X Factor in the viewing figures, producers need to pull out all the stops to ensure they don't have another ITV flop on their hands.

Things are going to have to get a lot more interesting indeed to make sure that they don't.
