Theresa May was grilled big time over her social care U-turn on The Andrew Neil Interviews
He didn’t drop the topic.
Andrew Neil grilled Theresa May over her controversial social care plans in the first of a series of TV interviews between the broadcaster and political leaders.
The Andrew Neil Interviews kicked off with the Prime Minister, who really hadn’t had a good day after being on the receiving end of serious backlash following the announcement that a cap on social care costs would now be included in her plans, having previously been ruled out.
After questioning May over the Conservatives’ drop in the polls, Neil swiftly turned the conversation to care costs – and the people of Twitter strapped themselves in for the bumpy ride.
May told Neil that she was “being absolutely honest” about the challenge facing the British people and “absolutely honest with them about the need for us to deal with this now, to start fixing it now”.
She continued: “I’ve seen the way that Jeremy Corbyn wants to sneak into Number 10 by playing on the fears of older and vulnerable people, and I’ve clarified what we will be putting in the Green Paper which I set out in the manifesto.”
To which Neil said: “So Jeremy Corbyn is now rewriting your manifesto?”
Many people watching didn’t think she came off well at all.
Next up in the hot seat with Neil tomorrow at 7pm on BBC One is Ukip’s Paul Nuttall.
